Activities
At the heart of the La Rioja wine route
The unspoilt region of La Rioja Alavesa is teeming with hidden treasures, ready to be revealed to visitors in the know.
La Rioja Alavesa and its seven valleys is the perfect embodiment of this secret and still wild sierra, so popular with lovers of wine, history, tradition and architecture. The grape harvest is in full swing from summer until late autumn, with the red-cloaked vines creating magnificent landscapes: probably the best time of year for a romantic getaway or family holiday to the region.
A journey through time
A few miles from the Palacio lies the small medieval village of Laguardia, which enjoys extraordinary sweeping views of the vineyards.
Head inside the city walls to explore a charming village with wine woven into its history. Scattered with cellars and the characteristic narrow streets, Laguardia is home to an incredible array of buildings from the Middle Ages, as well as the Renaissance, Baroque and Neo-Classical eras.
Macán: a unique wine domaine
Driven by their quest to find the most suitable wine soils and discover local grape varieties, Benjamin and Ariane de Rothschild set their sights on producing one of Spain's great wines.
Their meeting with Pablo Alvarez, owner of Vega Sicilia, marked the birth of this ambitious project. United by a vision that combined authenticity with expertise, and a desire to sustain this initiative in the long term, the two families acquired a 110-hectare vineyard located in Rioja Alta, Spain's leading wine region, after a search that lasted seven years and involved 70 purchasing transactions. With its outstanding technology and traditional expertise, Bodegas Benjamin de Rothschild & Vega Sicilia produces two excellent wines, Macán and Macán Clásico, both of which express the finest characteristics of the region's traditional grape variety, Tempranillo.
A wealth of winemaking heritage
Aside from the hikes, running routes, and tours of the Dinastia Vivanco - the biggest wine museum in the world - the Palacio de Samaniego offers guests the chance to explore some of the best domaines in the valley and Rioja Alta, as well as enjoying some very special tastings.
